Daniel Montenegro

Tenor DANIEL MONTENEGRO (Shepherd), a Southern California native, has traveled the world performing on stages ranging from the Sydney Opera House in Australia to the Kodak Theater in Hollywood. This is his second appearance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; his debut came last summer as El Dancaïro in Carmen at the Hollywood Bowl. In the 2008/09 season, he was back with LA Opera for three productions: In Puccini’s La rondine covering Prunier, as the Italian lover in Il tabarro and in Bizet’s Carmen as El Dancaïro.

Recent season highlights include several roles with LA Opera, including his onstage debut with the company, performing the role of Gastone in La traviata alongside tenor Rolando Villazon and soprano Renée Fleming. Other recent roles with the company include Maxamino Mendez in the world premiere of Lee Holdridge’s opera Concierto para Mendez, Liberto in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea and Anibal in Moreno Torroba’s Luisa Fernanda opposite Plácido Domingo. He has just returned from Portland Opera, where he sang the role of the Steurmann in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer, having made his Arizona Opera debut in the same role during the 2005/06 season. During the same season, he covered the role of Alfredo for LA Opera.

Though opera is his passion, Montenegro is also equally at home on the concert stage. He is a featured member of The American Tenors. With The American Tenors, he appeared nationwide on PBS in their own television special, followed by concert performances thoughout the United States and parts of Europe. You can find The American Tenors’ debut CD/DVD release on Sony Classical.
