Brent Samuel

BRENT SAMUEL has toured and performed extensively in the United States and Asia and is an active soloist and chamber musician. He joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1999 and frequently performs with the Chamber Music Society and on the Green Umbrella contemporary music series.

A second-generation native of Los Angeles, Samuel earned his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Southern California, studying with Eleonore Schoenfeld and graduating magna cum laude as a member of several academic honor societies. He spent a semester studying in London with William Pleeth at the Royal Academy of Music, and completed his Master of Music degree at the Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard String Quartet. Samuel made his New York debut performing Hindemith’s 1940 Cello Concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra. While in New York he performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Group for Contemporary Music, and the International Sejong Soloists. He has collaborated on stage with such artists as Midori, Emanuel Ax, Gil Shaham, Christopher Parkening, Vladimir Feltsman, and members of the Guarneri, Juilliard, and Colorado String Quartets.

Samuel has participated in the Aspen, La Jolla, Marlboro, Sarasota, Santa Fe, and Tanglewood Music Festivals. He has been on the faculty of Pepperdine University and the American Festival for the Arts in Houston, Texas. He has recorded for New World Records, Vienna Modern Masters, and Samsung Classics.

Going to school with my mother, who is a public school teacher, to pick out my first cello. It was a 1/2 size instrument which I outgrew very quickly, but I still remember it.

Spending time with my daughter, Zoey, and trying to keep up with current events.
