Pacific Standard Time, directed by CHRISTINE GUTER, is the top vocal jazz ensemble at California State University Long Beach, Bob Cole Conservatory of Music. It is a highly select 8-12 member ensemble, requiring refined musicianship and improvisation skills.
The group has had the honor of performing at the most prestigious educational events in the country, including the Jazz Education Network International Conference, the International Association for Jazz Education Conference, multiple National and Regional American Choral Directors Association Conferences, and the California All State Music Education Conference. Pacific Standard Time has also performed at the New York Voices Jazz Festival, Los Angeles Jazz Festival, the Newport Beach Jazz Party, and the West Coast Jazz Party.
Pacific Standard Time has competed at the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, and taken first place in the Collegiate Vocal Jazz Ensemble division all three times they competed. As a part of this honor, they were invited back to perform at the historical and prestigious 52nd, 54th, and 57th Annual Monterey Jazz Festivals.
Many students from Pacific Standard Time have received national recognition through winning "DownBeat Magazine Student Music Awards" in the categories of Solo Jazz Vocalist, Pop/Rock Soloist, Latin Group, and Jazz Arrangements. In the Graduate College Vocal Jazz Ensemble category, Pacific Standard Time has been honored with DownBeat Awards for the past seven years in a row (2010-2016).
Graduates of Pacific Standard Time have been featured on “The Voice”, “The Sing-Off”, National Harmony Sweepstakes, national TV commercials, movie soundtracks, and national tours (Jennifer Lopez, The Jacksons).
