About the conductor

Krzysztof Urbański

Krzysztof Urbański

September 2012 marks the start of KRZYSZTOF URBAŃSKI’s second season as Music Director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He continues as Chief Conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, which also appointed him its Artistic Leader in recognition of the major contributions he has already made to the orchestra. From April 2013, Urbański will take up the position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

Upcoming debuts include concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, the Wiener Symphoniker (featuring the world premiere of HK Gruber’s Into the Open with Martin Grubinger), the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Washington’s National Symphony Orchestra (with Jean-Yves Thibaudet performing the U.S. premiere of James MacMillan’s Piano Concerto No. 3), and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He will also conduct two major European tours in 2013: with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra (with soloists Sol Gabetta and Alice Sara Ott) in the spring, and with the European Union Youth Orchestra (with Boris Berezovsky) in the summer.

Forthcoming highlights see him returning to the NDR Sinfonieorchester (to conduct The Rite of Spring), the Bamberger Symphoniker, the SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, the Gulbenkian Orchestra (in a program that includes The Planets and Thomas Adès’ Polaris), and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (conducting Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra). There are also plans for a European tour with the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in the fall of 2013.

Polish repertoire plays an important part in Urbański’s programming. He led the opening concert of the Polish Focus at the 2010 Schleswig-Holstein Festival with Sinfonia Varsovia, conducting Górecki’s Symphony No. 3. He made his debut at the 2010 Grant Park Festival in Chicago with a program including Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra, and conducted Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima with the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg in the fall of 2010. He has also been invited to take part in the birthday celebrations for Krzysztof Penderecki in November 2013 and to open the 2014 Beethoven Easter Festival.

Urbański graduated from the Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007, and in the same year was the unanimous first-prize winner of the Prague Spring International Conducting Competition. He has conducted all the major Polish orchestras, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Poznan Philharmonic Orchestra, and he served as Assistant Conductor of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007-2009. He holds the position of Adjunct Professor of Music (Orchestral Conducting) at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
