Yun Tang

Violinist YUN TANG, a member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1986, was a leading concert soloist in China. Born in 1950 in Shanghai, she began to play piano at age six and started the violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music when she was nine. She made her public solo debut at eleven at the Shanghai Spring Music Festival. At age 19 she was appointed concertmaster of the Shanghai Beijing Opera Orchestra. She has won numerous top awards in nationwide music competitions and was honored as special resident soloist for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the Beijing Central Philharmonic Orchestra. She has given many concerts and recitals all over continental China and more than 100 special TV and radio performances. She gave master classes at conservatories and music schools throughout China during the years of her concert tours. All her recordings were best sellers in China. She was in the award-winning documentary film From Mao to Mozart with Isaac Stern.

In 1980, she went to the West, studying violin with Ivan Galamian in New York, and with Yehudi Menuhin and Helen Dowling in London. Yun Tang made her Western debut with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra at the 1980 Gstaad Festival. She played Paganini's Concerto No. 1 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Festival Hall in 1982 as her London debut, a performance that received a public ovation and critical acclaim. With Harold Holt Ltd as her management agent, she played concerts and recitals in the Barbican Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, and many return concerts throughout the UK, as well as in Germany, Norway, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and the USA, plus Hong Kong and Singapore, as well as making recordings for radio and television. Since 1996 she has again given solo concerts in China and master classes at the Shanghai Conservatory. In 2002 she was appointed principal concertmaster for the Asia American Orchestra.

Her videotape Violin Tutor, published in 1995 and republished in VCD version in 2003, is very effective educational material for children's violin study programs (best selling in China). Her solo CD of encore pieces was published in 1998. Her Quick Method for Violin (Intermediate) DVD will be published in May 2007. Her newly created Yun Tang Violin Method is the latest cartoon violin educational Web program for children age 4 to 9.
