About This Performance
Pianist Gavrylyuk returns after a smashing performance last summer with another Romantic classic, Tchaikovsky’s quintessential Piano Concerto.
It’s difficult to imagine how a piece as popular as Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto could have faced such difficult obstacles as it did coming to the stage. Cruelly criticized by Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky eventually convinced Hans von Bülow to premiere the piece on a tour to America. That’s why the first performance of this quintessentially Russian Romantic concerto took place in Boston, Mass., in 1875.
