About This Performance

Bramwell Tovey closes the Classical Tuesday concerts with Mozart’s choral masterpiece.

To say the least, many myths and controversies have surrounded Mozart’s Requiem. Much of this confusion comes from his wife Constanze, who was in a tough position. Dearly in need of money, she had to turn in a completed work to its anonymous commissioner in order to collect the rest of the fee. She secretly enlisted the help of other composers, primarily Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Modern scholarship has, by and large, sorted out who composed what, but there are many performing versions available today.
