About This Performance
Making a welcome return, Hollywood Bowl Hall of Famer André Watts joins Leonard Slatkin for a double dose of Liszt and Ravel in this colorful program.
Although Liszt started his Second Piano Concerto during his virtuoso period, 1839-40, he put it away for a decade. When he finally returned to it, he revised and scrutinized it repeatedly, the final revision coming in 1861. The result of all these years is a remarkably imaginative use of form: a single movement of six sections unified by thematic transformations. It’s also less showy than his First Concerto.
