SummerSounds 2008 Program

Weeks 1 and 2

Jul 7 - 11
Jul 14 - 18

Peru

Music: INCA, the Peruvian Ensemble
The crew is back together for one more trip to some of our favorite places. With a fresh supply of bells, Cap'n, Professor, and Harpoona stop on the coast of Peru and hike the Inca Trail to the lost city of Machu Picchu. With panpipes and drums, we'll dance as the sun rises through the sacred gate.

Art: Learn about the Incas and try your hand at traditional arts and crafts from Peru. Weave a tapestry, decorate a gourd, create a mask or sculpt a pot out of clay.

Weeks 3 and 4

Jul 21 - 25
Jul 28 - Aug 1

Zimbabwe

Music: Masanga Marimba Ensemble
featuring Julia Chigamba and Ronnie Daliyo
Next, it’s on to the south of Africa, between the great green Limpopo and Zambezi rivers. The Masanga Marimba Ensemble, featuring Julia Chigamba and Ronnie Daliyo, will welcome us to the country of Zimbabwe. With giant marimbas, powerful drums and mysterious mbiras (thumb pianos), we’ll dance and sing to celebrate our return to the African continent.

Art: Explore tropical Zimbabwe and learn about traditional rituals and customs. You can choose to make a clay mask, a wrap doll, a mud cloth or a beaded crown.

Weeks 5 and 6

Aug 4 - 8
Aug 11 - 15

Louisiana Bayou

Music: Louisiana Bayou with Lisa Haley and the Zydekats
Wait! Is that Reggie Alligator?! Yep, it sure is! As the crew follows Reggie down to Louisiana, we meet up with our old friends Lisa Haley and the Zydekats. We’ll cook up a spicy jambalaya of music, dance, and good old celebration with accordions, mandolins, and rubboards. Don’t miss the final party as the Global Harmony brings it all home!

Art: Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans? Create your own souvenirs at the Fine Arts Outdoor Studio. Make a jester headdress, a painted beaded necklace, a Mardi Gras mask or a dancing puppet.
