Resident Advisor, National Take A Stand Festival
Founded in 1919, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's mission is to perform, present, and promote music in its varied forms at the highest level of excellence to a diverse and large audience, both at the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association is dedicated to continuing its pre-eminent status in the music world of the 21st century.
The National Take a Stand Festival is an opportunity for students from El Sistema-inspired programs throughout the United States to perform as part of a top-tier national youth orchestra. This year’s festival will feature two ensembles: a Symphony Orchestra for advanced musicians aged 12-18 and a Junior String Ensemble for intermediate string musicians, aged 12-15. The National Take a Stand Festival is a free program - travel, lodging, meals and programming are provided at no cost for all for participating student musicians.
The festival aims to develop a model for excellence and a national community of citizen musicians from historically excluded populations in the United States. Young musicians from diverse regions and backgrounds will become ambassadors of their programs, learning from world-renowned conductors and artist mentors in beautiful settings and concert halls, including Walt Disney Concert Hall.
Responsible for the supervision of NTASF student musicians during the course of the festival. Resident Advisors will serve as mentors and liaisons between NTASF participants and administrative and artistic staff to enhance each student's experience and to help ensure their physical and mental well-being. They will play a key role in shaping the experience of students.
Resident Advisors will be selected for the period of July 2-15, 2018 and will be provided a stipend in addition to room and board for the duration of the engagement.
- Supervise an assigned a group of 8-10 students for the duration of the festival
- Reside in dorms within close proximity to students
- Escort students to rehearsals, meals, and student activities as needed
- Document and report on student behavior to festival administration
- Assist NTASF staff in conveying and implementing established policies, addressing student concerns, and resolving conflicts
- Design, lead, and/or supervise recreational and social activities
- Where necessary, initiate response to emergencies and accompany students to medical appointments
- Maintain confidentiality of student medical and personal information
- Contribute to building an environment of relationships filled with trust, caring, respect, and support. Be an empathetic listener, supportive responder, and seeker of help
- Assist NTASF staff in executing logistics related to students’ travel, hotel, meal, and other arrangements.
- Assist in operational and production elements of the festival, and other duties, as assigned
- Strong experience teaching or supervising youth ages 12-18
- Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; experience working in underserved communities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to work long days and participate in overnight duty rotation
- Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required (other languages also a plus)
- Background in music preferred, but not required
- Drivers license preferred, but not required
- First Aid training preferred, but not required
