Italian by birth, citizen of the world by training, Andrea Caputo has studied all over the globe with some of the most sought-after mentors in the world: at the Colburn School in LA with Yehuda Gilad and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome with Alessandro Carbonare, and he graduated from the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg in the class of Wenzel Fuchs and the Conservatoire de Paris in the class of Pascal Moraguès.
An active orchestral musician, Caputo was appointed Associate Principal Clarinet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2026 and is a member of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. He has performed on many of the world’s most famous stages with some of its finest ensembles, including the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, Orchestre de Paris, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, San Diego Symphony, and Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia under the batons of Gustavo Dudamel, Riccardo Muti, Valery Gergiev, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Klaus Mäkelä, Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Gianandrea Noseda, Iván Fischer, Paavo Järvi, Daniele Gatti, Zubin Mehta, Christoph Eschenbach, Fabio Luisi, Manfred Honeck, Charles Dutoit, Hannu Lintu, Lahav Shani, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Rafael Payare, and Domingo Hindoyan.
A passionate chamber musician, Caputo is a founding member of Trio Caspar, the first Honors Chamber Music Ensemble in residence at the Colburn School. The ensemble was awarded a Gold Medal, the Lift Every Voice Prize, and the Horszowski Trio Prize for Piano Ensemble at the 2026 Fischoff Competition. Trio Caspar’s debut album, featuring works by Stravinsky, Schoenfeld, Larsen, and Schumann, is set to be released on the Delos label in the 2026/27 season. In addition, Caputo has performed with renowned chamber artists, most notably Paul Watkins (Emerson String Quartet), Gary Hoffman, and Tine Thing Helseth, and has toured with woodwind members of the Berliner Philharmoniker during the KonstKnekt Vinterfestspill in Norway.
Engagements in previous seasons included, among others, a tour in Europe with the Estonian Festival Orchestra and Paavo Järvi, European and American tours with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, a chamber music tour in Japan featuring Brahms and Mozart’s clarinet quintets, and his debut as soloist with the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Gábor Takács-Nagy, performing Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 1.
Caputo is a prizewinner of several national and international competitions, including the 18th Aeolus International Competition (Düsseldorf), International Clarinet Competition “Town of Carlino,” Premio Crescendo (Florence), and Sándor Végh Competition (Budapest). He also was one of the six semifinalists of the prestigious ARD International Music Competition in Münich, where he performed Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto with the Munich Chamber Orchestra.
As a teacher, Caputo was Professor of Clarinet at the Conservatory of Trapani, Italy, as well as a teaching assistant for the clarinet studio of his mentor Yehuda Gilad at the Colburn School.
Andrea Caputo is a Buffet Crampon artist and performs exclusively on its instruments. In his free time, he enjoys photography and exploring different food cultures.
