About this Artist
Pianist ANDREAS HAEFLIGER receives highest praise throughout the world for performances that possess a rare combination of power, elegance, and poetry. A musical thinker whose interpretations spring from a rich cultural heritage, he is a consummate artist and one of the leading pianists of his generation.
Summer 2007 performances included Ravel’s Concerto in G with Leonard Slatkin and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with James Conlon at the Aspen Festival of Music. Highlights of the 2007/08 season include this month’s Green Umbrella concert and subsequent appearances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen for Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto, and future performances with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnányi at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Haefliger also performs with Roberto Abbado and the Atlanta Symphony; Andreas Delfs and the Milwaukee Symphony; Hans Graf and the Dallas Symphony; Gilbert Varga and the Berlin Symphony; and Thierry Fischer and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, among others.
A sensitive and probing recitalist and chamber musician, Haefliger has appeared in the great recital venues and festivals of the world, including London’s Wigmore Hall, the BBC Proms, the Wiener Festwochen, and the Salzburg Festival. His regular chamber performances include collaborations with baritone Matthias Goerne, the Takács Quartet, and his wife, flutist Marina Piccinini. In recent seasons, the focus of his recital performances has been the “Perspectives on Beethoven” series, a personal exploration of the complete Beethoven piano works alongside related works by other masters. “Perspective” performances in 2007/08 include recitals in Birmingham and Antwerp, and at the Lucerne Piano Festival in Lisbon.
Other notable appearances include performances with the Minnesota Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Flemish Radio Orchestra, the Dallas, Boston, and Seattle Symphony orchestras, the BBC Proms with the BBC Scottish Symphony, and performances at home and on tour with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Danish Philharmonic in Copenhagen, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the NHK in Tokyo, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, among numerous other orchestras worldwide.
Born in Switzerland, Andreas Haefliger grew up in a musical household. After completing his studies at the Juilliard School, where he was twice awarded the Gina Bachauer Memorial Scholarship, he made his London recital debut at Wigmore Hall in 1993 and his London Proms debut with the Philharmonia in 1994. A growing discography includes works by Schumann, Schubert, Mozart, and Gubaidulina for Sony; and, for London/Decca, Schubert lieder with Matthias Goerne and the “Trout” Quintet and the Dvor?ák Piano Quintet with the Takács Quartet. The “Perspectives” series is recorded and released on the Avie label; recent discs include the second installment of the series, as well as a recital disc of Prokofiev, Wagner, and Franck, with Marina Piccinini.
