Roy Hargrove

About this Artist

Carter saw great potential in trumpeter ROY HARGROVE, with whom he alternated sets during a week at the Blue Note in New York in 1994. Born in Waco, Texas, in 1969, Hargrove was tapped early on as a talent by Wynton Marsalis, who visited his high school. Hargrove soon became one of the "young lions." While the versatile trumpeter excelled at various styles, he established himself as a highly original and sensitive interpreter of ballads. Hargrove has always pursued new directions in his music. In 1997, the trumpeter's Cuban-based band Crisol won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. In 2002, Directions in Music, a recorded collaboration between Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, and Michael Brecker, won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Jazz Album; in 2003, Hargrove introduced a new band, The RH Factor, which combined hip-hop with jazz.
