About this Artist
The young Danish bass STEPHEN MILLING was born in Copenhagen and received his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. In 1991 he was admitted to the Opera Academy, and upon graduation in 1994 he became a member of the Royal Danish Opera.
After several seasons accumulating repertoire in Copenhagen, where his roles have included King Marke in Tristan und Isolde, Daland in Die fliegende Höllander, and Philip in Don Carlo, Milling began to attract the attention of international conductors and theaters. Early appearances included Brander in Le damnation de Faust and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Concertgebouw under Sir Colin Davis, Timur in Turandot for his Italian debut at the Teatro Comunale de Firenze, and the Landgraf in Tannhäuser for his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
In 1999/2000 Milling made his debut at La Scala as Don Fernando in Fidelio and at Seattle Opera (his North American debut) as Fasolt in Das Rheingold and Hunding in Die Walküre in the first installment of a new Ring cycle directed by Stephen Wadsworth. He recently debuted at the Metropolitan Opera as Sparafucile in Rigoletto;
in Brussels as the Landgraf in Tannhäuser; with the San Francisco Symphony; at the San Francisco Opera as Philip in Don Carlo; and in the U.K. as part of the London Symphony Orchestra's Berlioz festival, singing Narbal in Les Troyens under Colin Davis.
In 2004/2005 he debuts at the Vienna State Opera, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, and at the Châtelet. These are Milling's first performances with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
