About this Artist
Italian-born conductor Speranza Scappucci is considered one of the leading conductors of her generation. Opening the 2017/18 season with Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège’s production of Manon Lescaut, she begins her tenure as Principal Conductor and returns in January to lead Carmen. She makes her White Lights Festival debut conducting the New York premiere of choreographer Jessica Lang’s Stabat Mater; returns to Juilliard to lead their commencement concert at Alice Tully Hall; tours with Orchestra Toscanini in Parma; and makes debuts with the Detroit Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, and Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.
Recent and upcoming operatic performances include La Bohème, La Traviata, La Cenerentola, and Don Pasquale at the Vienna State Opera; La Fille du Regiment and La Bohème at Opernhaus Zürich; a debut with Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Canadian Opera in Toronto; Attila at Liceu Opera, Barcelona; Tosca and I Puritani with Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège; La Sonnambula and a new production of Così fan tutte at the Opera di Roma; Il Turco in Italia at the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro; L’elisir d’amore at Music Academy of the West; a concert performance of La Sonnambula at Lincoln Center in a Lindemann / Juilliard School production; La Bohème at the Los Angeles Opera; La Cenerentola and Tosca at the Washington Opera; La Cenerentola and Le Nozze di Figaro at Teatro Regio di Torino; a new production of La Fille du Regiment at Santa Fé Opera; Norma at Teatro Sao Carlos, Lisbon; and La Traviata at the Macerata Opera Festival 2014.
Equally at home in symphonic repertoire, Scappucci has conducted the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orchestra Toscanini in Parma, Netherlands Radio Orchestra, Orchestra Teatro Lirico Cagliari, San Diego Symphony, Lucerne Festival Orchestra, and MiTO Festival Orchestra Verdi, as well as the Stabat Mater settings by Rossini with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and by Pergolesi with the Orchestra Regionale della Toscana, and made Gala Concert appearances at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris.
In November 2013, her first CD was released on Warner Classics, featuring Mozart arias with Latvian soprano Marina Rebeka and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2016 she released a CD on the Opus Arte label with Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu and the Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
