About this Artist
HERB ALPERT is a true Renaissance man and known as a world renowned musician, record label co-founder, music producer, composer, arranger, visual artist, Broadway producer and philanthropist. After early success composing “Wonderful World” with Sam Cooke and Lou Adler, Alpert went on to co-found A&M Records in 1962 with Jerry Moss, which grew from Alpert’s garage in West Hollywood into the largest independent record label in history. Alpert introduced the Tijuana Brass phenomenon with his signature sound that propelled him to global fame. In 1966, when the TJB craze was unstoppable, he achieved the unmatched accomplishment of having five albums, at the same time, on Billboards Top 20. He has sold over 75 million records and has 15 certified platinum and 14 gold. Alpert’s many music honors include seven Grammy Awards, the prized Trustees Grammy Award and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. He is the only artist to have a #1 record as a singer, “This Guy’s in Love with You” and as an instrumentalist, “Rise” in 1979.
Alpert explains, “There is a certain satisfaction and energy that comes from playing the horn – a feeling that I am really in the moment.” Herb Alpert has never stopped making music and in addition to his musical accomplishments, he has spent more than half his life as a respected, abstract expressionist painter and sculptor, whose work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.
Herb Alpert and his wife, singer Lani Hall, have been performing together, with their band, since 2006 and have two albums, “Anything Goes” and “I Feel You.” Their newest album, “Steppin’ Out,” will be released in the summer of 2013.
LANI HALL is a Grammy Award-winning vocalist, who was the original lead singer for Sergio Mendes’s group, Brasil ‘66. Brasil ‘66 was signed to A&M Records where Lani met her future husband, music legend Herb Alpert. They were married in 1973 and since then their lives and musical gifts have mingled. Known for her emotional vocal interpretations, Hall has the distinction of having recorded more than 14 solo albums in three different languages (English, Portuguese, and Spanish). “I am an interpreter,” Lani explains. “The singers that have influenced me the most are jazz singers. They and had the ability to pull you into a song and make it feel real.”
Lani started her solo career in 1971, and in 1983 she recorded the title song for the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again, which was produced by Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes. In 1986 she won a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance for her Latin album, Es Facil Amar.
Writing has always come just as naturally to Lani as singing. Written over the course of more than 30 years, Emotional Memoirs & Short Stories marks Lani’s debut into the world of literature, assembling works of both fiction and non-fiction, tied together by an intimate narrative.
Since 2006, Lani & Herb have been performing and recording together. They have released two albums, Anything Goes & I Feel You to critical acclaim. Their third and most recent album is, the soon to be released, Steppin’ Out. An eclectic blend of jazz, world and pop music, with their unique sound.
