About this Piece
Early in my career, I sat at the top of the United Center in Chicago as the Creative Producer for the Chicago Bulls and dreamed of new ways to fuse sport, music, and art. The court was more than a surface for the game; to me, it was a stage.
Years later, after traveling across the country, moving to Los Angeles, and having the privilege of directing some of the world’s greatest athletes, I found myself sitting in the last row of the Hollywood Bowl, looking out over the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the magic of Los Angeles, and one of the most iconic venues in the world. At that moment, my worlds collided. I began imagining what it would mean to pair the power and emotional depth of classical music with a sport globally renowned for its beauty yet rarely presented in this way.
Soccer players are among the world’s most elite athletes, but the sport itself is not purely one of force or speed. It is part science, part religion, part resolve. It is tension and release. It is the pursuit of the impossible: breaking a stalemate, winning the ball, finding space, breaking through, and ultimately scoring a goal. Through this fusion of cinema, sport, and orchestral music, we hoped to contextualize soccer in a new way, not simply as competition, but as an art form rooted in striving, emotion, precision, and transcendence.
As I reflect on the journey from the last row of this legendary venue to bringing this film to the stage tonight, my hope is that audiences feel the magic of this space, the brilliance of the orchestra, the spirit of Los Angeles Football Club, and above all, the essence of the game itself fully on display.
I am profoundly grateful to the incredible composer Adam Schoenberg for his incomparable talent and collaborative spirit; to the LA Phil and the entire organization for their trust and partnership; to LAFC for their creative collaboration; to my producing and editorial teams, led by Charlie Fritschner and Angelo Valencia; and to my family for their unwavering love and support.
Thank you for being here to witness what I believe is truly an artistic convergence: a unique fusion of art, sport, and music beneath the stars and lights of the iconic Hollywood Bowl.
