About this Piece

Orchis (Book of Flowers) is a performance for video, voice, and software that explores orchids and their connections to gender, queerness, politics, and desire. It traces natural and cultural histories of orchids, considering how orchids have been understood as queer-coded forms that resist categorization, while also functioning as symbols of military and economic power. The video component of Orchis (Book of Flowers) features books drawn from the Los Angeles Public Library’s collection. Through text and narration, the work unfolds as a journey through the stacks of the Central Library, a floral odyssey through conceptions of gender.
