The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra celebrates the marriage of jazz and film at the Hollywood Bowl. Scores scheduled to be performed to portions of famous films: The Pink Panther and Touch of Evil (Mancini); I Want to Live (Mandel); Bullitt (Schifrin); Paris Blues (Duke Ellington); and The Thomas Crown Affair (Michel Legrand).
Other scores, including ones composed by Quincy Jones and Elmer Bernstein, will be performed without accompanying clips. A special tribute to jazz trumpet master Miles Davis will take place to commemorate the 75th anniversary of his birth. The tribute will include a visual montage and a performance by Grammy-winner Wallace Roney, who owns two of Miles’ trumpets.
THE CLAYTON-HAMILTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA, co-led by bassist John Clayton, saxophonist Jeff Clayton, and drummer Jeff Hamilton, has received critical and commercial praise for its rousing live concert and festival performances, and award-winning recordings. Its first recording, Groove Shop, ws named by CD Review as one of the best recordings of 1990. Esteemed jazz critic Leonard Feather awarded it his 26th- and 27th-annual “Golden Feather Award” as both 1990’s and 1991’s “Best Big Band”. In addition to performing and recording on its own, the orchestra is in demand by artists such as Quincy Jones, Joe Williams, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Ernestine Anderson, Benny Carter and Dr. John. Their recording, Explosive! – featured vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and was the last he made under his own name as a leader. Their most recent recording, Shout Me Out! , has been hailed as their most exciting to date.
Post-bop trumpeter WALLACE RONEY initially gained experience playing in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1981, and later as a “tribute player,” paying homage to Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Bud Powell, and Thelonious Monk with his reliable and virtuosic playing. The husband of jazz pianist Geri Allen, Wallace was given the title, trumpet “heir” by Miles Davis himself.
