KCRW’s World Festival, Hosted by Tom Schnabel
Sunday, July 10, 2011 at 7PM
WHAT:
Journey to India with A.R. Rahman and the Los Angeles Philharmonic welcomes back to the Hollywood Bowl India’s most prolific and successful movie composer (five-time Oscar nominee including 127 Hours, and two Oscar wins for Slumdog Millionaire), A.R. Rahman, in his debut appearance with the LA Phil. The concert features a number of his landmark film scores – performed by the LA Phil and enhanced by newly created film montages projected on the Bowl’s big screens along with the performances of Rahman’s music.
This celebration of Indian music and culture also features the Indian electronica sounds of Karsh Kale, traditional Indian folk music from Rhythms of Rajasthan, and spectacular Bollywood and Bhangra dance from Bollywood Step Dance, and Sher Foundation. This concert is part of KCRW’s World Festival series and is hosted by Tom Schnabel.
A.R. Rahman, the man who has redefined contemporary Indian music, is the pride of the Indian nation and a role model for millions around the world. In a country where film music is the most popular form of music, Rahman is truly the emperor. A.R. Rahman, hailed by Time as the 'Mozart of Madras,' is one of the most successful artists of all time and, according to a BBC estimate, has sold more than 100 million albums of his works, comprising music from more than 50 movies.
Karsh Kale (pronounced Kursh Kah-lay) – a world-class tabla player/drummer, producer, composer, songwriter, remixer and DJ – has worked with some of the world’s leading artists such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Sting, Zakir Hussain, Herbie Hancock, Lenny Kravitz, Anoushka Shankar, Yoko Ono, Bill Laswell, DJ Spooky, Shujaat Khan, Vijay Iyer, Chaka Khan, Paul Oakenfold and many others. Kale has also established himself as a cutting edge film composer in India’s fast paced “Bollywood” film industry while continuing to score independent and crossover films in the West, and mixing traditional Indian sounds with electronic rock and pop.
Rhythms of Rajasthan returns to the Bowl with their vibrant group of folk musicians and gypsy dancers from western Rajasthan.
Launched in 2005, Bollywood Step Dance is the Southland’s premier Bollywood dance troupe, with many spectacular TV, movie and live appearances.
Sher Foundation brings together Southern California`s most talented Bhangra dancers. With their captivatingly unique style, they strive to bring a part of history, culture, and a flavor of Punjab to the stage.
