    WHAT:

    Charismatic British conductor Bramwell Tovey returns to the Hollywood Bowl to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Thursday, September 8, at 8 pm. The program presents Hector Berlioz’ Roman Carnival Overture, Camille Saint-Saëns’ popular Piano Concerto No. 2, performed by young pianist Joyce Yang, Charles Gounod’s Faust Ballet Music and Ottorino Respighi’s symphonic poem, Pines of Rome.

    Grammy award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth as well his warm, charismatic personality on the podium. His career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. His tenures as music director with the Vancouver Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras have been characterized by his expertise in operatic choral, British and contemporary repertoire. Tovey, who is entering 12th season as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony, also continues as founding host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic’s Summertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall. He returns to the Bowl later in the week to lead the LA Phil in the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with fireworks and on September 13, leading the LA Phil and the Los Angeles Master Chorale in Mozart’s Requiem.

    Critically-acclaimed as “the most gifted young pianist of her generation” with a million-volt stage presence,” Joyce Yang captivates audiences around the globe with her stunning virtuosity combined with heartfelt lyricism and interpretive sensitivity. The 25-year-old is the recipient of a 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant. She came to international attention in 2005 as Silver Medalist of the 12th Van Cliburn International Competition, the youngest prizewinner in the competition's history.
