    WHAT:

Conductor and keyboardist Jeffrey Kahane shares his pianistic talents with the Walt Disney Concert Hall audience, Wednesday, March 7, at 8 pm, in a recital featuring music by Bach, Chopin, Brahms and Kahane’s son Gabriel. Celebrating his 15th anniversary season with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO), Kahane performs as a soloist throughout the program and also with LACO members, violinist Margaret Batjer and cellist Andrew Shulman, performing Brahms’ Trio No. 1 in B major, Op. 8. The performance is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity Recitals, which feature some of the world’s leading virtuosos.

Equally at home at the keyboard or on the podium, Jeffrey Kahane has established an international reputation as a truly versatile artist, recognized by audiences around the world for his mastery of a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach, Mozart and Beethoven to Gershwin, Golijov and John Adams. Highlights of his 2011/12 season include play/conduct programs with the New York Philharmonic and with the Vancouver, Seattle and New Jersey symphonies; his debut conducting the Juilliard Orchestra at Lincoln Center; and play/conducting a Beyond the Score program with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Margaret Batjer has served as concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra since 1998. She made her first solo appearance at the age of 15 with the Chicago Symphony in Gian Carlo Menotti’s Violin Concerto, and since has been re-engaged by the Chicago Symphony, as well as a succession of other major orchestras, including the Philadelphia and New York String orchestras and the St. Louis, Seattle, San Jose and Dallas symphonies. Batjer has also appeared as a soloist throughout Europe with orchestras including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra and the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and Berlin Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Claus Peter Flor.

Andrew Shulman, cellist and conductor, has traveled the world in both roles. As a conductor he’s performed extensively in Europe and has conducted the world premieres of several major works, including the first performance of a previously unpublished work by Benjamin Britten with the Britten-Pears Orchestra. As a soloist, Shulman has performed all of the major cello concertos with orchestras in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East. He also directed the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the London Chamber Orchestra in concerto performances with the solo cello chair. He has also recorded more than 25 CDs with EMI as cellist of the Britten Quartet. He joined LACO as principal cellist in 2008.

Future performances for the 2011/12 Colburn Celebrity Recitals include: Piatigorsky International Cello Festival (March 18, 2012); and baritone Matthias Goerne with Christoph Eschenbach as pianist (April 16 and April 18, 2012).
