WHAT:        Music Director Gustavo Dudamel leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic and pianist Yuja Wang in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3. This performance marks the first time these two artists will work together at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The pair joined forces in February 2013 to record a live performance of the powerhouse piano concerto in Caracas with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. Yuja Wang will sign CDs at the LA Phil store following the performances on Thurs., Sat. and Sun., Dec. 19, 21 and 22. To read full program notes, please vist http://www.laphil.com/pianoconcerto3.

This program opens with the world premiere of Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason’s Blow bright, which takes its title from the final lines of Philip Larkin’s poem “Night-Music.” Bjarnason has set the whole poem as a song for voice and small ensemble, but that version has little in common with his new orchestral piece, other than some similarity of atmosphere. This new work takes inspiration from a single line from the poem – Blow bright, blow bright, the coal of this unquickened world - as well as Bjarnason’s thoughts on many other things, including the power of the ocean. “this piece is written in a very free flowing and instinctive way.” Says Bjarnason. “It’s actually very close to being pure abstract music.” To read full program notes, please visit http://www.laphil.com/blowbright.

The concert concludes with Stravinsky’s Petrushka, the composer’s second great ballet score – after Firebird and before The Rite of Spring – that propelled Stravinsky’s reputation as a musical revolutionary who pushed the boundaries of musical design. This will be the first time Dudamel performs Petrushka with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. To read full program notes, please visit http://www.laphil.com/petrushka.
