  • LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC ANNOUNCES THE ADDITION OF SIX WORLD PREMIERES BY YOUNG COMPOSERS ON OJAI MUSIC FESTIVAL PROGRAM
  • May. 23, 2016
  • WHAT:

The performance at the 2016 Ojai Festival that is the culmination of the residency between Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA) at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) has expanded to showcase young composers from the LA Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program (CFP).

This summer marks the 10th anniversary of the Composer Fellowship Program – an innovative opportunity that provides passionate young composers, ages 13-18, with the tools and the freedom to shape the future of music. CFP engages four remarkably gifted high school composers in an intensive two-year curriculum that includes group instruction, access to world-class artists, and two LA Phil premieres.

Four solo works by the current Composer Fellows: Robby Good, Luca Mendoza, Benjamin Champion and Ethan Treiman, will be added to the program, alongside works by Senior Composer Fellows Sharon Hurvitz and Andrew Moses. All six works have been commissioned by ICE and will be world premieres.

The Senior Composer Fellowship challenges students of high school age who have graduated from the two-year CFP track to more fully engage the professional music world and hone the skills, creativity, and knowledge they developed in their first two years through independent study.

Additionally, ICE and the YOLA at HOLA Symphonic Winds will perform a piece co-composed during the residency: CW Rainforest. The program will open and close with the world premiere of a Tania León co-commission Pa’lante which she will also conduct and which was specifically created for the residency.
