Los Angeles, CA (November 1, 2016) - The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents its Toyota Symphonies for Youth (TSFY) concerts for the 2016/17 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Designed for children ages 5 to 11, the Saturday 11 AM concerts are designed to introduce kids to the joys of classical music through the experience of live orchestra performance combined with the fantasy of theater. Each concert is preceded by a choice of workshops at 10 AM that incorporate art, dance, storytelling, and an instrument petting zoo.

Select TSFY concerts will be conducted by participants from the Dudamel Fellowship Program, created in 2009 by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, to provide a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil's orchestral, education and community programs.

The TSFY series will kick off the holiday season on Saturday, November 26, and Saturday, December 3, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing Tchaikovsky's beloved Nutcracker Suite, accompanied by sugarplum fairies from Barak Ballet. Barak Ballet is a Los Angeles-based ballet company founded in 2013 by artistic director, choreographer and former New York City Ballet dancer Melissa Barak, dedicated to envisioning, developing and performing contemporary dance for the modern age.

On Saturday, January 14, and Saturday, January 21, the LA Phil will perform music from Gustav Holst's The Planets, taking listeners on a journey through the solar system with the British composer's imaginative musical portraits of the planets. Composed between 1914 and 1917, The Planets offers an inspiring parallel between music and science, and an exploration of the human mind against the backdrop of space.

Saturday, February 18, and Saturday, February 25, will offer The Art of the Piano, an in-depth exploration of the piano, from the artisan who builds it to the virtuoso who plays it, through the theatrical portrayal of an original story. The concert will feature music by Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel and Gershwin.

The season will conclude on Saturday, April 1, and Saturday, April 8, with Reykjavík Festival: Maximus Musicus, featuring a lively mouse from the popular Icelandic children's book series created by Hallfríður Ólafsdóttir, a flute player with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Maximus Musicus will take attendees on a journey from Los Angeles to Reykjavík to explore the music and great outdoors of Iceland. The performance, conducted by Daníel Bjarnason, will feature new music and illustrations. The event is part of the LA Phil's Reykjavík Festival taking place April 7-17, 2017.
