The Colburn Celebrity Recitals series is endowed by a generous grant from The Colburn Foundation

    WHAT:

Schubert songs interact with plays by 20th-century writer Samuel Beckett under the direction of LA Phil Artist-Collaborator Yuval Sharon in Night and Dreams: A Schubert & Beckett Recital at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tuesday, March 21, at 8 pm. The fully theatrical evening pushes past creative boundaries in an exploration of common ground between the two creators in recital presentation structure.

"The aim is to unleash the music's drama and the drama's music, and to explore how the austere theatricality of a single Schubert song can illuminate the sonorous beauty of Beckett's taut prose," said Sharon of the production.

Bass-baritone Ryan McKinny, who recently performed the title role in the LA Phil's presentation of John Adams' Nixon in China to great acclaim, replaces tenor Ian Bostridge, who had to withdraw from the performance for personal reasons. The cast also features the return of soprano Julia Bullock, who appeared in the LA Phil's presentation of John Adams' El Niño late last year.

In addition, the evening features actors whose credits include stage, television and film including Alan Mandell and Barry McGovern, both of whom are renowned for their Beckett performances. Mandell first acted in a Beckett play more than 50 years ago and McGovern is known internationally for his award-winning one-man Beckett shows. Together the two appeared in a 2012 production of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," as well as last year's production of the playwright's "Endgame."

Other noted actors featured are Miles Anderson, Bella Merlin, and Priscilla Pointer. The distinguished lineup of artists is rounded out with two pianists: Wenwen Du and Richard Valitutto.

The Schubert song Der Doppelgänger replaces Schubert's Dass sie hier gewesen. The rest of the program remains unchanged.

The performance is part of the LA Phil's 2016/17 Colburn Celebrity Recitals series, which presents a season of virtuoso performances by world-renowned artists. Remaining events for the season are: pianists Martha Argerich and Stephen Kovacevich (April 8, 2017) and cellist Yo-Yo Ma, mandolinist Chris Thile and bassist Edgar Meyer (May 3, 2017).
