    WHAT:
On Saturday, November 17, the LA Phil will take a deep dive into the experimental and influential Fluxus movement with Fluxconcert, one of the largest Fluxus events ever to be put on by a major symphony orchestra. Designed to dissolve the perceived boundaries between audience, musician, and work, Fluxconcert will activate Walt Disney Concert Hall with sound, light, and action emanating from throughout the building. It will be an evening of chance encounters, unexpected delights, and historic performances including:

A rare performance of La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela's The Melodic Version (1984) of The Second Dream of The High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer from The Four Dreams of China (1962) in Dream Light, directed by Jung Hee Choi, composed by Young and with light design by Zazeela. This performance will start at 5PM in the Walt Disney Concert Hall auditorium.

Guest artists including Richard Kennedy, Andrew W.K., Hannah Higgins, Fluxus scholars of the Getty Research Institute (including Curator, Modern & Contemporary Collections Nancy Perloff and Associate Director Marcia Reed) and more, plus audience members, perform a selection of Fluxus works in the Concert Hall’s interior and exterior spaces. Works will include Ken Friedman’s Sonata for Melons and Gravity (beginning at 4PM and ongoing until 8PM), Alison Knowles’ Nivea Cream Piece (at 7PM), Pauline Oliveros’ Rock Piece (at 7PM), and many more.

An evening performance, starting at 8PM, by the LA Phil and Roomful of Teeth in the auditorium, features works by Yoko Ono, Benjamin Patterson, Nam June Paik, La Monte Young, Dick Higgins, Luciano Berio, and a world premiere by Steven Takasugi. John Cage’s Apartment House 1776 will be performed by guest vocalists Mia Doi Todd, Rodrigo Amarante, Dwight Trible, Odeya Nini, Andrew W.K., Joe Rainey Sr., and Georgia Anne Muldrow, plus the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth.

A special "Kool-Aid" drink by mixologist Arley Marks will be available at Patina bars throughout Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Fluxus was a wily, nebulous – and deeply influential – anti-establishment art movement that emerged in the 1960s. Comprised of an international collective of artists, composers, and poets, Fluxus aimed to collapse what it considered the false wall between art and life. The LA Phil’s Fluxus Festival is a survey curated by Christopher Rountree, in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute, in which the often-humorous, frequently challenging music and performances of Fluxus will be presented on and off-site. This exploration will include a combination of live events, printed materials, and symposia, including surprise appearances, installations and performances throughout the LA Phil’s 2018/19 Centennial season.
