    KKJZ's Jazz at the Bowl
WEDNESDAY, JULY 16, AT 8 PM

The contagious and uplifting sounds of gospel and jazz pour from the Bowl as Yolanda Adams, Take 6 and the Eric Reed Trio perform "Rejoice and Swing" on July 16 at 8 p.m. This spirited line-up of sacred sounds brings together the stars of gospel with some of jazz's most innovative musicians.

Grammy-winner Yolanda Adams has attracted music fans from all walks of life to the sounds of gospel with her charisma and enthusiasm for the genre. "I like to sing songs that in the end touch everybody," Adams says, "There's a humanity to these songs that gets in your blood." Adams' talent and energy is matched by the daring and accomplished Take 6, a dynamic a cappella sextet who joined forces their freshman year of college and have since touched the nation with their soulful voices and spirit-stirring sounds. . A primarily self-taught jazz pianist, Eric Reed has combined the sounds of jazz with the soul of gospel making a place for himself among masters of both genres.

Grammy-winning gospel artist YOLANDA ADAMS injects distinctive R&B and soul sounds into conventional gospel music. Her solid church background and love of all kinds of music, inspired by everything from Stevie Wonder to Beethoven, left her with a respect for traditional religious music, as well as a desire for more contemporary interpretation. A schoolteacher from Houston, Adams began her career as the lead singer with the Southeast Inspirational Choir and is still very involved in children's causes, specifically the FILA Corporation's Operation Rebound program, which address the concerns of inner city school children. This is Yolanda Adams' Bowl debut.

A cappella vocal group TAKE 6 relies on the simplest and purist form of instrumentation: voice. Superb vocal range, flawless tone, and rich harmonies brought the 6-member Alabama group fame early in their career with their 1988 self-titled debut. Their smooth blend of gospel, jazz, doo wop, and pop has proven a commercially viable and audience-appreciated sound. While the group has introduced keys, horn and percussion to their more recent work, vocals have remained their signature instrument. Take 6 just received their 17th Grammy nomination for their Tribute to Heroes performance with Stevie Wonder; the win made this the group's eighth Grammy for Soul-Gospel, Jazz, R&B and ensemble projects. Take 6 last played the Bowl in 1999.

The son of a minister, jazz pianist ERIC REED began playing at age two. By age seven Reed was studying classical piano and quickly distinguishing himself as a musical prodigy. His work as a teenage sideman included stints with Gerald Wilson and Teddy Edwards until he began working with Wynton Marsalis in 1988 which propelled him onto the heavy-hitting jazz piano scene. Reed has since released several contemporary jazz records as the leader of his own group, as well as film scoring projects. This is Eric Reed's Bowl debut.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of just under 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. A hit from its very first season, the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 35th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer, close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
