LOS ANGELES (June 11, 2026) – The LA Phil today announces new details of “The Art of the Goal,” a new mixed-media concept film from acclaimed filmmaker Josh Kahn and Emmy-winning composer Adam Schoenberg. The project will premiere with live scoring from the LA Phil and conductor Tito Muñoz on July 9 as part of the LA Phil’s “Classical World Cup” program.
“The Art of the Goal” is the first LA Phil-commissioned original film and score to premiere at the Hollywood Bowl in its 104-year history. Attendees will experience a unique fusion of art, sport and music beneath the lights of the iconic venue’s John Williams Stage, a premier forum for the live performance of film music.
“The Art of the Goal” explores the emotional and cultural power shared by live music and live sports, and celebrates Los Angeles–a city which will play host to matches from the FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl LXI and the 2028 Summer Olympics–in its ascendancy as a global sporting destination.
Kahn, whose career has operated at the intersection of storytelling and sport, says, “It’s an honor to bring this historic collaboration to life. Sitting in the Hollywood Bowl and looking out over the Los Angeles Philharmonic, I began imagining what it would mean to pair the power and emotional depth of classical music with a sport globally renowned for its beauty. For me, ‘The Art of the Goal’ represents the beginning of a larger creative mission: bringing two major cultural worlds, classical music and sport, into deeper conversation through cinematic storytelling.”
Schoenberg’s score, performed live by Muñoz and the LA Phil, underscores the narrative drama and rhythm of sport with expressive depth. Schoenberg adds, “The Art of the Goal is a match made in heaven. As a former collegiate soccer player, this is the first project where I can combine my passion for music with my love for soccer.”
The film will also feature players for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) on the pitch and behind the scenes, highlighting both the exacting preparation and kinetic drama which define the global game. The project combines the artistry of LAFC's soccer stars with a cinematic editorial perspective, revealing the nuance, movement and intensity of soccer in a new way.
“We are honored to be able to have LAFC featured in ‘The Art of the Goal’ and to be part of this unique celebration of soccer, sport, and culture in Los Angeles and beyond,” said LAFC Co-President & Owner Larry Freedman. “Our players compete at the highest levels of the game and represent their countries on the world’s stage, embodying the precision, excellence, and passion that define football. We are proud to work alongside Josh Kahn, Adam Schoenberg and the LA Phil by providing unprecedented access to our club and support the vision of bringing together the artistry of sport and music in such a powerful and innovative way.”
“The Art of the Goal” is produced by Charles Fritschner for Kahn’s production company, MYLES, and is edited by Angelo Valencia.
