  • Seminar Building a Cultural Identity Features Panelists Lance Bowling, Susan Key, Norman M. Klein, and Lisa See

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, at 7:30 PM

The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues its new Inside/Outside seminar series with Building A Cultural Identity on Wednesday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Walt Disney Concert Hall's BP Hall. This program, the second in the series, examines Los Angeles life in the first decade after the Philharmonic's 1919 founding. The program includes a discussion about the role Hollywood played in shaping Los Angeles and how waves of immigration have made the city a multi-cultural metropolis. Musicologist Susan Key moderates a panel discussion with music archivist Lance Bowling; author and social critic Norman M. Klein (The History of Forgetting: Los Angeles and the Erasure of Memory); and writer Lisa See (On Gold Mountain). Mezzo-soprano Suzanna Guzmán and pianist Peter Grunberg perform popular and art music from the era.

Building a Cultural Identity is the second of seven Wednesday evenings that comprise the Los Angeles Philharmonic's new Inside/Outside seminar series. The series continues with The Sounds of the Avenue on January 21; El Alma de Los Angeles on February 18; The Entertainment Capital of the World on March 24; Urban/Suburban: Los Angeles in the 1950's and 60's on April 21; and Blurring Boundaries on May 19. Tickets can be purchased individually or as a series. Tickets for each Inside/Outside seminar are $10 and can be purchased at the Walt Disney Concert Hall box office, online at laphil.com, or by calling 323.850.2000. All seminars take place in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
