  • Feb. 19, 2004
  • Renowned Pianist Radu Lupu is Soloist

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19; FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20; and SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, AT 8 PM; SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 22 AT 2 PM

Acclaimed conductor Franz Welser-Möst leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in four performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 19-21, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, February 22, at 2 p.m. The Austrian maestro pays homage to his compatriots in a program featuring music by Austrian composers Berg, Schubert, Mozart and Johan Strauss Jr., spanning nearly three centuries of repertoire. Pianist Radu Lupu, widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of works by Mozart, joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic as soloist in Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23.

The program includes Berg's Three Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 6 and Schubert's Symphony No. 8, "Unfinished," and concludes with Johann Strauss' Artist's Life, Op. 316.

Upbeat Live pre-concert events take place one hour prior to each concert in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall, and are free to all ticket holders.

Since his American debut with the St. Louis Symphony in 1989, the distinguished Austrian conductor FRANZ WELSER-MÖST has made annual visits to the United States. Welser-Möst's rise to the international circuit began in 1986 when he made his debut with the London Philharmonic, a relationship that developed over the next four years and resulted in his appointment as music director in 1990, a position he held for six years. Since 1995, Welser-Möst has been the music director of the Zurich Opera, where he made his debut in 1992 with Der Rosenkavalier. In June 1999, The Cleveland Orchestra named him its next music director - a five-year tenure he began in the 2002/2003 season, making him the seventh music director in the organization's history.

Pianist RADU LUPU is firmly established as one of the most important musicians of his generation and is widely acknowledged as a leading interpreter of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Schubert. Since winning the 1969 Leeds Piano Competition, Lupu has regularly performed as soloist and recitalist in the music capitals and major festivals of Europe and America. In addition to regular appearances in the United States and Europe, Lupu has traveled as far as Japan and China, touring the latter with the European Community Youth Orchestra. He made his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1973, and has returned regularly.
