Brendel is Los Angeles Philharmonic's "Artist in Residence" for 2003/2004

The Los Angeles Philharmonic continues its Colburn Celebrity Recital series with piano virtuoso Alfred Brendel at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 6, at 8 p.m. Brendel performs three works by Mozart including Fantasia in C minor, K. 396, Sonata in B-flat major, K. 281, and Sonata in E-flat major, K. 282. He also performs Schubert's Drei Klavierstücke, D. 946, and concludes with Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109, by Beethoven.

Renowned for his masterful interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert, Brendel is the first performer to have recorded all of Beethoven's piano compositions, and one of the few to have recorded all of Mozart's piano concertos. A man of many talents, Brendel was selected to participate in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's artist residency, On Location, a program which presents a distinguished artist in multi-faceted ways. This year's residency highlights Brendel's artistry as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (conducted by David Zinman, April 1, 3 & 4), accompanist (to baritone Matthias Goerne, March 29), recitalist (April 6), chamber musician (performing with his son cellist Adrian, April 9), and as a poet (April 7 at the Goethe Institute in Los Angeles).

Pianist ALFRED BRENDEL began his formal music education at the age of six and, though his piano lessons ended at the age of sixteen, he continued to study with Paul Baumgartner and later attended master classes given by Eduard Steuermann and Edwin Fischer. His reputation as a musical intellectual began early with his debut recital at the Kammermusiksaal in Graz, Austria in 1948. After winning a prize in the 1949 Busoni Competition in Bolzano, Italy, Brendel became active as a recording musician, which cultivated a truly international audience. Brendel, with an extensive discography featuring his renowned interpretations of Beethoven, Liszt, Mozart, Brahms, Haydn and Schubert, stands also as the first ever to record the entire catalogue of Beethoven's piano compositions and one of the few to have recorded all of Mozart's piano concertos. Since that time, Brendel has regularly appeared with the world's major orchestras and has toured internationally, performing the complete cycle of the 32 Beethoven sonatas and all five piano concertos. Recent engagements have included recital tours of North America and annual returns to Carnegie Hall.
