  • CONDUCTOR JOANA CARNEIRO LEADS YOUNG MUSICIANS FOUNDATION DEBUT ORCHESTRA IN PROGRAM AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL
  • May. 2, 2004
  • Program Includes World Premiere of Work by Composer David Newman

SUNDAY, MAY 2, AT 7:30 PM

Conductor Joana Carneiro leads the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra in a program at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m. The program includes the world premiere of David Newman's Remember, as well as Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol and Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5, "Emperor," featuring piano soloist Misha Dichter.

Newman's work includes five small movements that are unified, to a degree, by a simple falling perfect fifth motive. "Memory, it seems to me, has the effect of modulating one's present reality and expected future, to the extent that what may or may not have happened in the past still exerts a hold on one's present reality," says Newman. "This idea that the past is present in all of life, right now, has always intrigued me. Classical music itself is haunted by the past. For better or for worse, everyone who composes music must come to terms with what has come before. This art music will undoubtedly live as long as there is still culture. For me, this is something to celebrate and take comfort in."

The presentation of the Young Musicians Foundation Debut Orchestra is part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Sounds About Town concert series, a group of performances spotlighting the Los Angeles area's premier youth orchestras. The May 2 program concludes the 2003/04 series.

Outstanding young conductor JOANA CARNEIRO has already attracted considerable attention. Currently, she is the recipient of the Young Musicians Foundation Conducting Grant and the BMI Foundation, Inc. Lionel Newman Conducting Study Grant. She serves as Music Director of the YMF Debut Orchestra, having won the Young Musicians Foundation's 2002 National Conductor Search. A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon. Carneiro received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University; she is currently pursuing her Doctorate at the University of Michigan. In the 2003/04 season, Carneiro will participate in the International Conductors' Academy of the Allianz Cultural Foundation with Kurt Masur and Christoph von Dohnanyi in London.

DAVID NEWMAN has scored over 80 films during his 16 year career, ranging from War of the Roses, Bowfinger and Heathers, to the more recent Cat In The Hat and Ice Age. He has an Academy Award nomination for his score to the animated feature, Anastasia, and was also the first composer to have a work, 1001 Nights, performed in the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Filmharmonic Series. In 1987, Robert Redford selected Newman as musical director of the Sundance Institute. During his tenure he wrote an original score and conducted the Utah Symphony Orchestra for the classic silent motion picture, Sunrise, which opened the Sundance Film Festival in 1989.

Pianist MISHA DICHTER can trace his musical heritage to the two great pianistic traditions of the 20th century: the Russian Romantic School as personified by Rosina Lhévinne, his mentor at The Juilliard School, and the German Classical style that was passed on to him by Aube Tzerko, a pupil of Artur Schnabel. Dichter's recordings on the Philips, RCA and MusicMasters labels include the Brahms Piano Concerti with Kurt Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Brahms solo works including the Handel Variations, Beethoven piano sonatas, the complete Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodies, the Liszt Piano Concertos with André Previn and the Pittsburgh Symphony, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with Sir Neville Marriner and the Philharmonia Orchestra, as well as music of Chopin, Mussorgsky, Schubert, Schumann, Stravinsky, and Tchaikovsky. A noted exponent of Liszt's piano works and a champion of the composer's forward-looking contri

butions to the development of music, Dichter was honored in 1998 with the Grand prix international du disque, presented for his recording of the Liszt piano transcriptions on the Philips label.

YOUNG MUSICIANS FOUNDATION (YMF) is one of the oldest and most respected organizations on the West Coast serving young musicians both locally and nationwide by providing performance opportunities, financial assistance, and music education programs to thousands of young musicians at all stages of development each year. One of YMF's 13 programs, the Debut Orchestra has a rich history that includes more than 45 premieres of works by such composers as Igor Stravinsky, Ingolf Dahl, and Michael Torke. The orchestra provides important pre-professional training for young musicians ages 14-25 from the greater Los Angeles County and Orange County areas. For more than 13 years, YMF and BMI have collaborated in presenting premieres of works by BMI composers. The newest partnership is the BMI Composer-in-Residence: a two-year position for an established BMI film and television composer to build a relationship with the Debut Orchestra and the Los Angeles community in presenting new works and developing appreciation of new music.
