Eliane Elias Makes Her Hollywood Bowl Debut

The 2004 Jazz at the Bowl series continues with Jazz Lowdown on Wednesday, July 21, at 8:00 p.m. The program features pop/funk jazz artist Boz Scaggs performing a set of his greatest hits, complemented by the unique jazz of smoky-voiced Cassandra Wilson. The concert opens with the soft, Brazilian-tinged explorations of pianist Eliane Elias as she makes her Hollywood Bowl debut.

The Jazz at the Bowl series continues on July 28 with Count Basie's Centennial Celebration featuring the Count Basie Orchestra with special guests Ernestine Anderson, Jon Hendricks, Dianne Reeves, and Diane Schuur; Piano Masters on August 4 featuring the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Ramsey Lewis, and McCoy Tyner; Latin Jazz Night on August 11 featuring Willie Colon, Los Hombres Calientes, and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra; New Orleans Night on August 18 featuring the Neville Brothers, Terence Blanchard, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band; Cool, Pure, 200-Proof featuring the Zawinul Syndicate, the Dave Holland Big Band, and the Michael Brecker Quindectet; and A Night with Blue Note on September 1 celebrating the legendary jazz record label featuring Van Morrison, Dianne Reeves, and special guests.

After first finding acclaim as a member of the Steve Miller Band in the late '60s, singer/songwriter BOZ SCAGGS went on to considerable fame and success in the '70s with hits such as "Lowdown" and "Lido Shuffle." Born in Ohio in 1944, he moved to San Francisco where he met Miller and recorded two acclaimed albums with the band. After a couple of critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful albums, Scaggs found his stride with albums Silk Degrees, Down Two Then Left and Middle Man. He spent much of the '80s in retirement, owning and running the San Francisco nightclub Slims but resurfaced with a succession of pop/R&B/jazz efforts. Last year saw the release of his jazz standards album But Beautiful. Scaggs last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 2003.

An unequaled jazz singer, CASSANDRA WILSON is known for her trademark mix of originals and adventurous covers. She has continued to stretch the boundaries of jazz, adding her unique smoky vocals to fresh interpretations of pop, folk and country standards. She began playing piano at age nine and moved to New York in 1982, where she met the saxophonist Steve Coleman and became the vocalist for his cutting-edge urban free-funk group the M-Base Collective. Since then she has recorded many albums of original material but found herself with the acoustic-blues based album Blue Light 'Til Dawn. She most recently recorded her 14th album Glamoured for the Blue Note label. She last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 2000.

Brazilian-born pianist ELIANE ELIAS has the virtuosity of a classical musician and the spontaneity of a jazz artist, and with her Brazilian heritage merges it into a unique combination. A former member of Steps Ahead (Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine, Mike Manieri and Eddie Gomez) she also collaborated with Randy Brecker, whom she later married. Since then she has embarked on a solo career and releases a new album in Spring 2004. She last performed at the Bowl in 1998.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduces audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 35th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
