  • Feb. 17, 2005
  • Program Includes Beethoven's Violin Concerto and Two Suites by
    French Composers

    THURSDAY, FRIDAY, AND SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 18, AND 19, AT 8 PM;
    SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20, AT 2 PM

    February 17 is sponsored by The Korea Times, official Korean media sponsor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Hollywood Bowl.

    Conductor Stéphane Denève makes his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 17, 18, 19 at 8 p.m. and on February 20 at 2 p.m., featuring violinist Midori in Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61. Denève, a native of France, also conducts suites by two of his countrymen: Fauré's Suite from Pelléas and Mélisande and Roussel's Bacchus and Ariadne, Suite No. 2.

    Midori also performs prior to the concert in Upbeat Live, a pre-concert series, which begins at 6:45 p.m. on February 17, 18, and 19 and at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday. These special Upbeat Live events take place in Walt Disney Concert Hall auditorium and are free to all ticket holders. Midori performs Beethoven's Archduke Trio with two students from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where she has recently been appointed to the violin faculty, holding the Jascha Heifetz Chair. The students are Ruslan Biryukov, cello, and Karina Sabac, piano.

    The violinist MIDORI made her historic debut at the age of 11 when she was introduced as a surprise guest artist by conductor Zubin Mehta at the New York Philharmonic's annual New Year's Eve concert in 1982. Since that night she has established a record of achievement that sets her apart as a master musician, an innovator, and a champion of the developmental potential of children.Midori's performing schedule balances recitals, chamber music performances, and concertooappearances at the Tanglewood, Cape Cod Chamber Music, Sun Valley, and Bath Festivals; recital tours throughout the season to the U.S., Europe, and Asia; and concerto appearances throughout Europe and the U.S. in collaboration with conductors Alan Gilbert, Pinchas Zukerman, Leonard Slatkin, Stéphane Denève, and Ingo Metzmacher. In 1992 Midori founded Midori & Friends, a nonprofit organization in New York that brings music education programs to thousands of underprivileged children each year. Two other organizations, Music Sharing, based in Japan, and Partners in Performance, based in the U.S., also bring music to the lives of people who may not otherwise participate in the arts. Midori's commitment to community collaboration and outreach extends to her work with young violinists in master classes all over the world, her University Residencies Program, and faculty positions at the Manhattan School of Music and USC's Thornton School of Music, where she holds the Jascha Heifetz Chair.

    STÉPHANE DENÈVE, an exciting young conductor of the highest caliber, begins his tenure as Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in September 2005. A graduate of the Paris Conservatory, where he was awarded a unanimous First Prize in 1995, Denève began his career as the conducting assistant to Georg Solti at Orchestre de Paris and Paris National Opera and to Seiji Ozawa at the Saito Kinen Festival. With great affinity for the music of his native France, Denève conducts works by Grétry, Debussy, Ravel, Berlioz, Roussel, Fauré, and Poulenc. He also is very much at home in a broad range of repertoire, particularly in the music of Mozart, the romantic era, and the early 20th-century. Denève has conducted such orchestras as the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Sydney and Melbourne symphonies, New Japan Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. He has also conducted productions at the Paris National Opera, Salzburg, Montpellier Opera, and Cincinnati Opera.
