  • LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC 2001/2002 CHAMBER SERIES COMES TO A CLOSE WITH EVENING OF EASTERN EUROPEAN MUSIC
  • May. 13, 2002
  • AHMANSON HALL AT THE SKIRBALL CULTURAL CENTER

MONDAY, MAY 13 AT 8 PM

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Chamber Music Society closes the 2001/2002 series of concerts on May 13. Presented on the evening's Eastern European-themed program are Dohnányi's Serenade in C for String Trio, Bartók's String Quartet No. 2, and Dvorák's String Quintet in G, Op. 77.

This Los Angeles Philharmonic chamber music concert takes place at 8 PM at Ahmanson Hall in the Skirball Cultural Center. Ahmanson Hall is located off the 405 Freeway at the Mulholland/Skirball Center Drive exit. The address is 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., in West Los Angeles.

Highly praised by Brahms, composer, conductor, and pianist Ernö Dohnányi (1877 - 1960) was considered one of Hungary's most versatile musicians in the 20th century. While touring London and Vienna in 1902, before beginning a six-year term as a piano professor at the Berlin Hochschule, Dohnányi composed the five-movement Serenade in C for String Trio. The Serenade received its premiere in 1906 in Vienna, and marked a return to the multi-movement style of works of the 18th century.

Dohnányi's friend from his early school days, Hungarian composer Bela Bartók, wrote the second piece on the evening's program - the String Quartet No. 2. Between 1915 and 1918, Bartók wrote a number of pieces based on Hungary's folk songs; one of them (1915 - 1917) being String Quartet No. 2, which displays Eastern European and Arabian music influences.

Another composer known for writing works using folk music influences was Antonín Dvorák, whose String Quintet in G, Op. 77 is the final piece of the evening. A prolific composer, Dvorák is believed to have completed almost 40 chamber works; he composed the String Quartet in G in 1875 - just two years after he was first published.

Chamber Music Society concerts are presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic in association with The Norman and Sadie Lee Foundation as a community service.
