Grammy-Winning Vocal Ensemble Returns For Annual Christmas Concert
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2008, AT 8 PM
Heralded as “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker magazine, Chanticleer returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall Tuesday, December 16, at 8 PM, with A Chanticleer Christmas. Continuing their much-loved tradition, this captivating “orchestra of voices” brings the bright spirit of the season to the Hall in a radiant holiday program.
Named 2008 Ensemble of the Year by Musical America, Chanticleer delivers an eclectic program of music, ranging from Gregorian chant to contemporary masterpieces. The all-male vocal ensemble, praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply-etched clarity,” will tour 27 of the United States in their 31st season. Chanticleer’s most recent release, “The Mission Road,” is a CD and DVD set featuring music from California’s vibrant mission period.
Deck the Hall, presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, is a series of festive performances throughout the month of December (including two concerts on New Year's Eve) featuring an array of exceptional artists offering seasonal music. Other performances include: Holiday Organ Spectacular, December 17; ‘Twas the Week Before Christmas, December 20 and 21; Holiday Sing-Along, December 21 at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM; The Count Basie Orchestra, December 22; Soweto Gospel Choir, December 23; and Pink Martini on New Year’s Eve at 7 and 10:30 PM.
CHANTICLEER will perform more than 100 concerts in 2008/09, the Grammy-winning ensemble’s 31st season. Their national tour includes appearances at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and in Chicago with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In July 2008, the ensemble performed at prestigious festivals in France, Germany, Poland and Latvia. Based in San Francisco, Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. With its seamless blend of 12 male voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned international renown as “an orchestra of voices.”
