LOS ANGELES (March 16, 2009) — The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today announces the Hollywood Bowl summer 2009 programming for its 88th season at the historic venue. The Hollywood Bowl – recently named “Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue” by Pollstar magazine for the fifth straight year – is one of the most renowned summer cultural venues in the United States and has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1922.

The 2009 summer season spans 14 weeks, from June to September, and includes presentations of classical music by the Los Angeles Philharmonic; popular weekend shows with the Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra; jazz; world music; pop; rock; and special presentations, as well as family and educational programs.

The Hollywood Bowl remains an important cultural destination that offers accessible programs from a broad musical menu, attracting audiences of all ages and interests, and keeping the arts a vital part of the everyday experience. With ticket prices starting at just $1 and a transportation system starting at $4 – one that alleviates the need to endure traffic and parking – as well as the choice to pack your own picnic, patrons can easily experience a night of music under the stars.

    NEW JAZZ LEADERSHIP

Legendary jazz icon Herbie Hancock will succeed bassist Christian McBride as the third Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association.

“It is a great honor to be selected as the next Creative Chair for Jazz, and follow in the footsteps of Christian McBride, who has presented programming of incredible breadth and talent,” says Hancock. “I intend to continue this tradition and also bring to fruition new ideas and one-of-a-kind programs in two of the finest venues for live music - Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.”

“We are truly privileged to have such a highly-regarded musician of the caliber of Herbie Hancock to follow Christian McBride as our next Creative Chair for Jazz,” says Deborah Borda, President of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. "We are thrilled to welcome him to our organization, and deeply grateful for Christian’s guidance."

With an illustrious career spanning five decades, Hancock continues to amaze audiences and never ceases to expand the public's vision of what music, particularly jazz, is all about today. Hancock solidified his place as the ultimate crossover jazz artist when he won the 2007 Grammy Award for Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters. Hancock will oversee jazz programming at both the Walt Disney Concert Hall and Hollywood Bowl during his two-year tenure, starting with the Hollywood Bowl’s 2010 season. He will work with the organization year-round, building on the Philharmonic’s presence in the musical community as a leading presenter of jazz.

“My tenure as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic has truly been one of the most rewarding of my career,” says McBride. “It was an unbelievable opportunity to present unprecedented jazz programs. Having the legendary Herbie Hancock succeed me in this position is an astounding honor and a testament to the LA Phil’s firm commitment to promoting the best that jazz has to offer.”

    SUMMERSOUNDS: Music for Kids

Festival of Music and Art at the Hollywood Bowl

The Hollywood Bowl celebrates its 42nd year of presenting one of the most popular children's festivals in Southern California. The six-week festival of music and arts for children ages 3 to 11 takes place weekday mornings. SummerSounds 2009 explores ethnic Los Angeles – its musicians, the neighborhoods they reflect and the world music that informs them. Director Debbie Devine, joined by colleagues from the educational theater troupe The 24th Street Theater, created programs designed to discover music, dance and art from the dynamic cultures of Brazil, Mexico, and India: explore the rich cultural heritage of Brazil with the Swing Brazil Dance Company led by Vida Vierra, July 6-17; Mexico in East L.A. with Cesar Cortez, July 20-31; and Little India in Artesia, featuring the Shakti Dance Ensemble led by Viji Prakash, August 3-14. Kid-friendly musical performances and theme-related arts workshops change on a bi-weekly basis; visitors are invited to observe orchestra rehearsals at the Bowl at no additional charge. Tickets for SummerSounds are $7. Fine Arts Outdoor Studio tickets are $5. For a brochure or more details, call 323.850.2000.

EDMUND D. EDELMAN HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM

The Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum, located on the grounds of the 88-acre county park, provides a living history of the world-famous venue through a permanent multimedia presentation with themed exhibits updated each season.

New at the Hollywood Bowl Museum this summer is a highly interactive exhibition called SOUNDSCAPE – Hearing Music at the Hollywood Bowl. How can you “see” a sound wave? When you are sitting somewhere in the middle or the top of the Bowl, why is there a delay between the sight of the conductor’s baton coming down and what you actually hear? How did people hear the music at the Bowl before microphones and speakers were used? Using hands-on devices developed by the Exploratorium in San Francisco, you will answer these questions for yourself.

    • You can talk or sing into the Sound Spectrogram and see a moving picture of your voice.
    • You can talk into an Echo Tube swooping 100 feet around the museum.
    • You can play the Oscylinder Scope, which explores the nature of sound by directly translating the vibration pattern of musical strings into visible waves.
    • You can manipulate sound waves with Visible Effects of the Invisible, where a speaker causes fluid in a tube to vibrate, creating geysers that respond to resonant frequency.
    • You can place yourself anywhere in the Hollywood Bowl in a computer simulation demonstrating Speed of Sound.
    • You can play the Musical Wall, understanding how strings, winds, and percussion work.

Continuing on the first floor of the Museum is Hollywood Bowl: Music For Everyone. Taking its cue from the Bowl’s slogan from the 1950s, “Music For Everyone,” the exhibit traces the history of symphonic music, opera, jazz, rock, pop, world music, and dance at the Bowl through sounds and images.

The Museum is located on the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl on Peppertree Lane. Admission is free. Summer hours (June 19 - September 26): Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to concert start-time, and Sundays, 4 p.m. to concert start-time. Off-season hours: Tuesday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays by appointment. Closed Sundays, Thanksgiving Day, and December 25 – January 1. For more information, call the Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum at 323.850.2058.

    THE BOWL WALK

Developed as part of the renovations in the 2004 Hollywood Bowl Shell Project, The Bowl Walk is a 10-station exhibit around the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, a Los Angeles County Park, which beckons visitors to view the venue outside and around the theater. The exhibit features visual displays throughout the park, presenting information on the cultural events, history and architecture of the legendary natural amphitheater. The Walk begins at the entrance of the Bowl (on Peppertree Lane) and concludes inside the theater on the Fourth Promenade at the top of the hill.

Ten photographic displays along the pedestrian walkways guide visitors through the park: The Muse of Music, Peppertree Lane, Pop & Rock at the Hollywood Bowl, Great Performances, The Shell, The Amphitheater, The Cahuenga Pass Treasure, Flora & Fauna of the Hollywood Bowl, Picnics & Fireworks, and The View from the Fourth Prom. An accessible sign fixed in the plaza area, near the Box Office and Bowl Store, includes Walk information for patrons with disabilities. The exhibit design is by Hodgetts & Fung.
