Tickets on Sale This Saturday, April 11, at Hollywood Bowl Box Office
FRIDAY, JUNE 26, AT 8:30 PM
Aretha Franklin plays the Hollywood Bowl for the first time in 35 years. Backed by her own band, including a string ensemble, she blends new material with her vintage soul. This concert has been added to the Hollywood Bowl 2009 lineup and tickets for this one-off performance go on sale to the general public this Saturday, April 11, at noon.
Aretha Franklin’s music is a veritable American songbook of almost half a century from the first breakout hit, “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” to “Respect” to “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” performed at President Obama’s inauguration.
Franklin’s awards and accolades run deep. She was recently ranked #1 by Rolling Stone on its list of “The Greatest Singers of All Time” and was the first female artist inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She is one of the most honored Grammy winners with 21 Grammys to date, including the Lifetime Achievement Grammy and the Living Legend Grammy. In 2008, Franklin was honored as MusiCares “Person of the Year,” two days prior to the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. As an American icon, Franklin was given America’s top honor of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.
One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
