Learn about the Bowl

From Igor Stravinsky to Billie Holiday, the Bowl’s stage has been home to music history for more than a century.

The LA Phil is many things—an orchestra, a collection of four world-class venues, and youth education programs—united by one core belief: that music transforms and connects us and must be accessible to all.

Through education, accessible performances, and local partnerships, the LA Phil and Hollywood Bowl supports Los Angeles communities, nurturing the creative spirit and cultural vibrancy of the city that inspires us.

Get to know the Bowl

  • icon of two hills

The venue sits in a naturally bowl-shaped area of the Hollywood Hills, originally known as Daisy Dell. The setting was selected partly for its natural acoustics.

  • Movie Clapboard icon.

The Bowl is older than the Hollywood Sign! Its beginnings date to 1919.

  • The Bowl is one of the world’s largest natural amphitheaters, seating nearly 18,000 people while still feeling closely connected to the surrounding hills and trees.

  • It is both a concert venue and a public park. The land was deeded to Los Angeles County in 1924 to preserve it for future generations; today, the County owns the Bowl and operates it in partnership with the LA Phil.
