Neighborhood Investments
Every year, the LA Phil invests resources into serving the communities surrounding the Hollywood Bowl. These investments include physical upgrades to the venue, updated programs and services to reduce impacts, and the hiring of experts to address key concerns around traffic and sound. As an internationally known venue, we continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of our neighbors.
Traffic Mitigation
Reducing the number of cars traveling to the Hollywood Bowl has been a long-term effort. The Hollywood Bowl actively works with neighbors, government partners, and lease partner Live Nation Hewitt Silva to develop measures to promote alternative means of transportation.
-
The Bowl's Park & Ride and Shuttle bus programs transport more than 200,000 patrons per year.
-
The LA Phil has worked with its neighbors and partners to implement changes this year that will improve access to the Hollywood Bowl for all events, whether presented by the LA Phil or our lease event partners.
-
Our goals with these recommended changes are to try to improve the overall concertgoing experience by mitigating traffic congestion, improving the experience for our neighboring communities, and continuing our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the Bowl.
-
To ease congestion before and after concerts, the Hollywood Bowl has prioritized Park & Ride and Bowl Shuttle service as the preferred means of transportation to and from the Bowl.
-
In short, beginning this season, on-site parking will be available in Lots A and D and reservations must be made in advance; Lot B will serve Shuttle and Park & Ride visitors, ADA parking, and will have limited on-site parking; and we are expanding our Rideshare capacity by dedicating Lot C as our Rideshare Hub.
-
The Hollywood Bowl regularly works with neighbors and City Council offices to limit the number of overlapping high-traffic events in the area, which includes the Hollywood Boulevard theater district.
-
For every event, the Hollywood Bowl works with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to deploy traffic control officers in the area. When we expect a particularly large number of patrons, we increase the number of officers deployed to minimize gridlock.
-
We have increased digital signage to orient patrons and discourage non-concertgoers from driving through the area.
-
Working with LAPD and LADOT, the Hollywood Bowl has worked to increase the enforcement of traffic and parking laws in the area during events.
Reducing Sound “Spillage”
Before the start of the 2022 Season, the Hollywood Bowl installed a new cardioid system to focus sound to the audience and reduce spill-over into the neighborhood. This builds on other recent efforts to reduce sound impact including sound monitors for every show, restrictions against extra sound systems brought in by performers, and modified sound level pre-show sound checks.
Neighborhood Tickets
Recognizing the resource that this arts venue is to the region, we are committed to working with neighbors to provide access to the offerings of the Bowl. In addition to a longstanding practice of providing 4,000 vouchers to neighbors for Philharmonic performances, we also provide a series of additional tickets to adjacent neighborhood associations so they can arrange neighbor events at the Bowl as well as reward volunteers and active members in their own community. We have also significantly increased the number of concerts eligible under our voucher program.
For more information, please contact your neighborhood advisory group representatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
1: Why are there street closures on some concert nights?
On select high-traffic concert nights, Milner Road at Highland Avenue as well as Camrose Drive at Highland Avenue are fully closed to all traffic except for emergency vehicles. This full closure also allows mapping apps like Waze, Google, and Apple Maps to direct drivers away from using these streets. Due to California law, streets cannot limit access to residents only.
If you'd like notifications about upcoming closures on Hollywood Bowl event days, sign up to receive a text message the morning of each full closure.
2: There are many traffic officers placed around the neighborhoods during concerts. What is their role?
For every event, the Hollywood Bowl works diligently with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to deploy traffic control officers in the area. When we expect a high number of patrons, we increase the number of officers deployed to minimize gridlock.
Traffic officers work for the LADOT rather than LAPD. On concert nights, some traffic officers are assigned to issue parking citations while others are assigned specifically to direct traffic. Traffic officers are not authorized to cite drivers for moving violations.
When traffic is flowing, you may see traffic officers standing to the side, as per LADOT protocol.
On rare occurrences, traffic officers may be assigned to a different part of the city due to other events in the city and unknown circumstances, such as emergencies.
For more information about traffic at the Bowl, see our fast facts.
3: Are there plans to expand the Park & Ride Bus and Bowl Shuttle program?
Yes, we already have and continue to do so each year. As shuttle and bus ridership increases each year, we continually monitor the number of patrons purchasing tickets for the Park & Ride or Bowl shuttles to ensure we have enough buses bringing patrons to the Bowl. Our goal is to continually increase mass transportation ridership to the Bowl – the easiest way to get to the Bowl for patrons and the best way to ease congestion in the area. Learn more about our Park & Ride or Bowl Shuttles.
4: Do you work with rideshare and traffic apps to recommend routes that don't disrupt the neighboring communities?
Yes, we work with rideshare and traffic apps within the limits set by them and the City of Los Angeles. By implementing full closures at Milner Road at Highland Avenue as well as Camrose Drive at Highland Avenue, mapping apps like Waze, Google, and Apple Maps direct drivers away from using these streets.
Additionally, we work with Uber and Lyft to implement geofencing to allow Hollywood Bowl patrons to only access those services in certain areas. In 2024, we implemented a new system to allow patrons to more quickly access their rides in Lot C, away from surrounding neighborhoods. Learn more about rideshare at the Bowl.
