About this Performance
The title of warp and weft by Sarah Gibson refers to textile weaving, which she analogizes by weaving her musical materials together. When young Beethoven wanted to wow Vienna, he wrote his first two concertos to show off his astonishing skills as a pianist. Though numbered first, this is the second of those exciting showpieces. Following is Robert Schumann’s five-movement Third Symphony—towering, gentle, and exuberant—led by New Zealand’s Gemma New, a former Dudamel Conducting Fellow.
