About this Artist
Silvana Estrada is a Latin Grammy winner for Best New Artist (2022), three-time Latin Grammy nominee, and a Grammy nominee for Best Global Music Performance (2024). The genre-bending multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter has become known for melding North and Latin American traditions that intersect with the African-influenced jarocho heritage of her native Veracruz, Mexico.
Born and raised in the small mountain town of Coatepec, Estrada grew up surrounded by musicians visiting her family’s home to commission a new violin or cello, or to have their instruments repaired by her parents, both of them luthiers. As a teenager, Estrada was drawn to pick up her now-signature Venezuelan cuatro guitar, handcrafted especially for her by her father. “It has such a beautiful sound,” she shares, “Holding it is like an embrace.”
Estrada has released two critically acclaimed albums and multiple EPs. Marchita, her sophomore LP, released via Glassnote Records, led to an extensive international tour that included three dates at Walt Disney Concert Hall, performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as part of the “Canto en Resistencia” series.
Marchita came to Silvana after falling in love for the first time, and after a breakup that ultimately led her to embrace herself and fiercely defend her own unique voice. Silvana talks about the withering of what was, but finally, the sprouting of something new.
Silvana has performed and/or recorded with the likes of Natalia Lafourcade, Mon Laferte, Snarky Puppy, Helado Negro, Charlie Hunter, Andrew Bird, and Devendra Banhart, and her work has been praised by NPR, The New York Times, The Guardian, BBC World Service, Pitchfork, SPIN, Billboard, Rolling Stone, Esquire, The Needle Drop, and many others.
The multifaceted artist, based in Mexico City, is currently working on her next record.
