WHAT:       The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents the Tchaikovsky Spectacular with Fireworks, Friday and Saturday, August 16 and 17, at 8 pm, at the Hollywood Bowl. Robert Moody conducts the orchestra in the all-Tchaikovsky program which includes Selections from Swan Lake Suite, Op. 20, Capriccio Italien, Festival Coronation March and a Ukrainian Folk Song Suite (drawn from the Symphony No. 2). The annual Bowl tradition offers a new twist this season – the brass, drum corps and color guard of three of California’s top-ranked drum and bugle corps, Pacific Crest, Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Vanguard Cadets, recent winners of the Drum Corp International Open Class World Championship Finals, performing in a Drumline-style collaboration. The program culminates with the thrilling 1812 Overture accompanied by cannons and a spectacular fireworks display.

Robert Moody has been Music Director of the Winston-Salem Symphony (North Carolina) since 2005, Artistic Director of Arizona Musicfest since 2007, and Music Director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine) since 2008. Moody has accompanied many of the world’s greatest performing artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Renée Fleming, Denyce Graves, André Watts, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, Midori, Time for Three and Chris Thile. His work can be heard on several commercially released compact disc recordings. He collaborated with the Canadian Brass for their "Bach" and "Legends" CDs; he is also the conductor for the CD "4th World," highlighting the music of Native American recording artist R. Carlos Nakai (available on the Canyon Record label); and in 2010, the Winston-Salem Symphony released their performance (live from 2009) of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. A DVD of Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Arizona Musicfest was released in 2012.

Started in 1993 with 33 students, today Pacific Crest is one of North America’s leading performing groups in the marching arts. The 150-member Drum and Bugle Corps travels and performs throughout the U.S. each summer in front of 100,000 spectators. The ensemble has also appeared in cinema broadcasts, on television shows and commercials, and in world-class venues, including the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the Rose Bowl. As a member of Drum Corps International (DCI), a nonprofit organization serving drum and bugle corps, Pacific Crest represents the City of Diamond Bar and the Southern California Region as one of 22 teams in Marching Music’s Major Leagues.

The Santa Clara Vanguard is a musical and movement youth activity that combines brass, percussion, dance and color guard into a competitive marching unit. The Vanguard has won six Drum Corps International World Championships and two Winter Guard International Championships, traveling more than fourteen thousand miles across the United States each summer. The Vanguard competes against other high-caliber drum corps nearly every night of the summer in professional and college stadiums. The organization has a reputation of superior excellence and innovation in the world of pageantry and is known throughout the world. The Santa Clara Vanguard (SCV) was formed in 1967 in Santa Clara, California.

The Vanguard Cadets have been a DCI Open Class (formerly Division II/III) Finalist every year the Corps has appeared in DCI World Championships (1991, ‘93, ‘98, ‘2000, 2002, ‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08) and won DCI Division II in 2000 and DCI Open Class in 2008 and 2013. The Corps has also competed in the DCI Division I Quarterfinals in 1993, Semifinals in 2000 and the DCI World Class Semifinals from 2011-13. The Vanguard Cadets are the primary training group for membership in the Vanguard. The Vanguard Cadets travel approximately four weeks during the summer months across the United States and Canada performing in competitive field shows and parades while providing instruction for the novice through the experienced member in the areas of brass, percussion and color guard. Membership is primarily open to those between the ages of 15 and 19.
