Multiple Grammy-nominated recording group Death Cab for Cutie make their Hollywood Bowl debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by conductor/arranger David Campbell on Sunday, July 5, at 7:00 p.m. Opening the show are Canadian duo Tegan and Sara and Vancouver indie rockers The New Pornographers.
Originally formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997, Death Cab for Cutie has built a loyal and steady following with their emotive, melodic rock. The band flourished with several independent releases, but rose to superstardom in 2004 with the major label release of Plans. The Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling album spawned three major hits, “I Will Follow You Into the Dark,” “Crooked Teeth,” and “Soul Meets Body.” Their 2008 follow-up, Narrow Stairs, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 with the help of the chart-topping single, “I Will Possess Your Heart.”
David Campbell is a seasoned musician, composer, arranger, and conductor. In the early ‘70s he worked as a session musician with such artists as Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, Jackson Browne, Barbra Streisand and many more. He spent much of his career composing notable orchestral arrangements, recently highlighted by Radiohead’s performance of “15 Step” with the USC Trojan Marching Band on the 2009 Grammy Awards. Last season at the Hollywood Bowl, he arranged and conducted for his son Beck’s debut at the venue. During the current 2009 season, Campbell will be arranging and conducting for Ray LaMontagne on July 12 and Faith Hill on July 17 and 18. In addition, the July 2, 3 and 4 concerts with the legendary John Fogerty will feature Campbell’s orchestral arrangements.
Tegan and Sara - the critically revered singers, songwriters and identical twins - have performed with an incredible range of artists including Neil Young, The Killers, Rufus Wainwright and Ryan Adams. Death Cab for Cutie’s own Chris Walla produced their fifth album, The Con, and he is also working on Tegan and Sara’s sixth studio album to be released in the fall.
The latest incarnation of Vancouver supergroup The New Pornographers features the talents of A.C. Newman, vocals, guitar; John Collins, bass; Blaine Thurier, keyboards; Kathryn Calder, vocals, keyboards; Kurt Dahle, percussion; and Todd Fancey, lead guitar. The band’s 2007 album, Challengers was hailed as their "best album" by Paste Magazine, deemed "the group's finest hour" by MOJO and "a perfect uber-pop album" by PopMatters.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
