About this Performance
When filmmaker Stanley Kubrick used Also sprach Zarathrustra in his sci-fi epic, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the thunderous and monumental piece became permanently cemented in pop culture history. Former Dudamel Fellow Anna Handler marks her first appearance at the Hollywood Bowl with a boom, conducting Strauss’ famous symphonic poem paired with Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp and a world premiere fanfare.
Mozart famously despised the flute and only ever wrote one piece (this one) for the harp, but he put his all into the double concerto, creating an utterly charming and stellar work. When principal harpist Emmanuel Ceysson and principal flutist Denis Bouriakov first performed the piece with the LA Phil in 2022, “Both played with precision and musicality, creating sonic landscapes that could be gossamer one moment and grand the next. Together, they formed a seamless pair, handing phrases back and forth with ease even in the most demanding passages (All is Yar).
Eunike Tanzil composed Fanfare for the Hollywood Bowl to commemorate her former Juilliard classmate’s Bowl debut and make an unforgettable first impression.
