About this Performance
“Never was there a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” Nor was there a story that inspired so many retellings across the cultural landscape. Two of their most indelible musical adaptations bookend this concert: Tchaikovsky’s romantically saturated fantasy overture and Prokofiev’s pulsating suite.
Dance Theatre of Harlem joins the Los Angeles Philharmonic, along with conductor Stephanie Childress, who makes her LA Phil and Hollywood Bowl debut, in bringing Shakespeare’s vision to life. In between, the company sets in motion Adolphus Hailstork’s Symphony No. 1, bringing together influences from West Africa, South and Central American, Asia, and Black spirituals into a classical structure.
Adolphus Hailstork’s Symphony No. 1 will be danced by Derek Brockington, Micah Bullard, Alexandra Hutchinson, Ingrid Silva, Delaney Washington, and David Wright.
“Dance of the Antillean Maidens” from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Suite No. 2, Op. 64 will be danced by Derek Brockington, Ariana Dickerson, Carly Greene, and Alexandra Rene Jones.
“Romeo at the Tomb of Juliet” from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Suite No. 2, Op. 64 will be danced by Kamala Saara, Kouadio Davis, Delaney Washington, Derek Brockington, Kira Robinson, Ethan Wilson, Michaela Martin-Mason, Sean Miller, Ingrid Silva, Renan Cerdeiro, Lindsey Donnell, and Jhaelin Mcquay.
Please note that Jonathon Heyward, who was previously scheduled to conduct this concert, is unable to attend the performance and will be replaced by Stephanie Childress.
