Tokyo-born singer and lyricist Mai Fujisawa first came to international attention at the age of 4 with her performance of “Nausicäa Requiem” from Joe Hisaishi’s score for Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. She later joined the NHK Tokyo Children’s Choir and has since established a distinguished career spanning concert performance, recording, and lyric writing.
Her debut album Mai was recorded in Sweden and the Czech Republic through collaborations with leading Scandinavian composers. Her notable vocal performances include the opening theme of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (music by Alexandre Desplat) and the main theme of NHK’s epic historical drama Clouds Above the Hill, based on the novel by Ryōtarō Shiba.
As a lyricist, she contributed the Japanese lyrics for Disney’s Maleficent (“Once Upon a Dream”) and Cinderella (“A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes”). From 2017 to 2025, she appeared as featured soloist on the acclaimed international tour Joe Hisaishi Symphonic Concert: Music from the Studio Ghibli Films of Hayao Miyazaki, performing before audiences worldwide with leading orchestras.
Alongside her solo career, Fujisawa founded and directs the women’s chorus Little Carol, one of Japan’s most respected vocal ensembles, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Beyond the concert stage, she serves as a goodwill ambassador for Nakano City in Nagano Prefecture and has written and performed official theme songs for municipalities throughout Japan. Her international engagements have included the Australian tour Melody of Japan, and in 2022 she released her album Beautiful Harmony on Nippon Columbia.
Recognized for her distinctive artistry and expressive vocal style, Mai Fujisawa continues to build bridges between Japanese and international musical cultures through performance, recording, and creative collaboration.
