Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years coffee table book
What it is: To commemorate the centennial, the LA Phil has published Hollywood Bowl: The First 100 Years, written by Derek Traub and edited by Julia Ward and Robin Rauzi. This image-filled, coffee-table-style publication comprises ten theme-based chapters that move fluidly through time, drawing on first-hand accounts and rarely seen photographs, to answer the deceptively simple question: What makes the Hollywood Bowl, the Hollywood Bowl?
Where you can get it: The book is available now! Exclusively for purchase through the LA Phil Store and The Bowl store–both online and in person.
Hollywood Bowl 100: The First 100 Years of Music vinyl box set
What it is: A stunning collection of seven LPs including nearly 100 years of recordings from the Hollywood Bowl, featuring classical, pop, rock, film music, jazz, Broadway, and selections from the American Songbook. The vast majority of the set’s tracks have rarely, if ever, been heard after their initial live performance! More than 70 iconic musicians and musical ensembles are featured in the collection, many of them giving performances they later deemed as career-defining moments.
Where you can get it: Just like the book, is available for purchase exclusively through the LA Phil Store and The Bowl Store, both online and in person.
The First 100 Years Podcast Series and Multimedia Website
The First 100 Years will also include a 10-episode podcast series. Each episode tells a story about the Hollywood Bowl in relation to a specific location from the Hollywood Bowl’s 88-acre campus, from Highland Avenue to the back benches, from 1922 to today. Written and hosted by the book's author Derek Traub, the podcast series shares never-before-told and long-since-forgotten stories drawn from dozens of oral history interviews and thousands of documents from the Bowl’s archive and historical collections across Southern California. Photos from the LA Phil’s archive will accompany each episode online. Each of the ten episodes is tied to a specific location on the Bowl’s campus. Listen in-person at the Bowl to enjoy the series as a self-guided audio walking tour.
