Attention Pilots: Hollywood Bowl and the Skies Above
On view 2016
Ljiljana Grubisic, Curator
The exhibition “Attention Pilots: Hollywood Bowl and the Skies Above,” examined the long-standing efforts by the LA Phil to keep the skies above the venue clear of aircraft during performances. The LA Phil’s efforts to preserve one of the key environmental features of the Hollywood Bowl – a quiet oasis where live music can be heard under the stars in the middle of the buzzing city – have included outreach to airplane and helicopter pilot associations, air traffic controllers, the air support division of the LAPD, and the local office of the FAA. The exhibition’s core visual component – the ‘no fly’ posters produced since the 1970s – were distributed throughout these organizations and around the city to help dissuade aviators from flying over the Bowl during the summer season.
